Junior Postdoc or PhD Position - Quality Control mechanisms during ER-Golgi transport

The VIB-Center for Brain and Disease Research (KULeuven, Belgium), headed by Prof. Patrik Verstreken, is a vibrant and international research center where outstanding questions related to major neuroscience and neurological challenges are tackled.

The laboratory for Membrane Trafficking (Prof. Wim Annaert) studies the assembly and localization of g-secretase, an enzyme complex critically involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease, and consisting of the catalytic subunit Presenilin, Aph1, nicastrin and PEN-2. We identified Retrieval-to-ER 1 (Rer1p) as a cargo receptor required for the quality control (QC) during Golgi-to-ER recycling of multi-protein complex assembly, including γ-secretase (Spasic et al., J. Cell Biol.,176(5), 629-640, 2007; Jurisch-Yaksi et al., J. Cell Biol., 200(6), 709-728, 2013). In small animal models, deficiency of Rer1p causes developmental defects up to lethality underscoring a critical physiological role for Rer1p in ER-Golgi transport regulation of specific cargo that remains underexplored. We have performed an extensive interactomics study identifying several new candidate interactors that link Rer1p to different ER-related homeostatic pathways. 

A postdoc or PhD position is open with a focus on validating now these new interactors. The team uses advanced molecular and biochemical approaches (proximity ligation and ER transport assays, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing) as well as superresolution microscopy (PALM/dSTORM, SIM) and EM to functionally explore Rer1p function in cellular and small animal models, including Drosophila.


We seek a young and ambitious junior postdoc or PhD fellow with a biochemical and/or cell biological background and proficient experience in molecular biology and advanced microscopy (confocal to nanoscopy). The ability to work in a multidisciplinary research team as well as effective communication and writing skills and a good mastery of the English language are essential for a successful selection.


Financial support is available for the duration of the PhD, or 3 yrs for a postdoc, but the successful candidate is encouraged to obtain independent funding during this time. Starting date ASAP.
