About VIB Nucleomics Core

The VIB Core Facilities Program comprises 11 state-of-the-art core facilities that provide all 1500 researchers with early and expert access to state-of-the-art technologies ( 

The VIB Nucleomics Core, based in Leuven, provides an assortment of fee-based services to address biological questions in the fields of transcriptomics and genomics. Our user base consists of both VIB and non-VIB scientists throughout Europe. Key applications are gene expression analysis, whole-genome sequencing, amplicon sequencing, ChIP-seq, genome assembly, variant calling, CRISPR screening, single-cell sequencing, and more. Illumina, PacBio and Oxford Nanopore Technologies are the main sequencing platforms that are being used to facilitate these types of experiments. Bioinformatics services are an integral part of the Nucleomics Core’ service package. 

With an average annual growth rate of 15%, in order to consolidate the excellent service panels and to adapt the facility to the quickly developing technological needs, we are looking for an enthusiastic bioinformatician to strengthen our group. More info on

Job description/responsibilities

You will join our bioinformatics team in first instance to execute the following main tasks:

  • Provide data analysis service to life science researchers
    • Carry out quality control of in-house produced data.
    • Run in-house developed analysis pipelines on a day-to-day basis.
    • Deliver results to customers and provide additional explanation when necessary.
  • Contribute to maintain and extend our panel of data analysis services
    • Maintain existing automated procedures.
    • Design and develop new analysis pipelines for sequencing data.

Your daily work will be in close interaction with colleagues from the wet-lab and users, meaning that excellent interpersonal & communication skills are essential. English is the working language.


  • Minimum level: bachelor degree in bioinformatics / biostatistics / biology / biomedicine / genomics, or equivalent through experience.
  • Basic knowledge of molecular biology is essential - Experience with Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) data analysis is a plus.
  • Knowledge of open-source bioinformatics tools and resources used in NGS (e.g. Ensembl/NCBI/UCSC).
  • Initial practical knowledge of R/Bioconductor and one scripting/programming language (Python or equivalent) is essential.
  • Practical knowledge in using Linux servers is essential - Working knowledge of biostatistics, high-performance computing environments, cloud computing and pipelining tools such as SnakeMake/Nextflow is a plus.
