About the institute and research infrastructure

Within the VIB, the BioImaging Core Leuven supports imaging across scales from the nanometer level to the mesoscale. The core is hosted by the VIB Center for Brain and Disease Research, and its mission is to facilitate science and provide access to know-how and measurement time on state-of-the-art microscopes. The BioImaging Core Leuven offers different imaging solutions, including confocal microscopes, slide scanning, high-content screening, and 3D whole-organ imaging, as well as support with image analysis both with infrastructure and expertise. While the current open position is dedicated to light microscopy, an important aspect of the core is the connection with our EM infrastructure.

We are seeking a dedicated and motivated person who is passionate about microscopy and will help life scientists at VIB and beyond get the most out of our innovative microscopes. This position will be primarily responsible for providing support to the core users by consulting with researchers on their imaging projects and performing training for users on routine and advanced microscopy systems. Next to other VIB research lines, the primary goal is to support various projects of our center, including basic neuroscience projects and projects on neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. As the imaging core facility, we want to step up our training and quality management efforts in this context. Therefore, your task will be to modify and continue to develop microscopy protocols for training, outreach, maintenance, and reproducibility.
- Experience in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment and the ability to work independently is desired.
- Previous imaging/confocal knowledge and hands-on experience with routine and advanced multi-color experiments are desirable.
- You have a high affinity for technology and technological solutions.
- You have strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- You have independent critical thinking and problem-solving ability with an attention to detail.
- You enjoy collaborating with a diverse group of researchers with various interests.
- You are flexible and will contribute to the daily operational workload of the team.
- You are fluent in English, both verbally and written. Knowledge of Flemish is a plus.
- You possess, at the minimum, a degree in Biomedical or Biological Sciences (Bachelor/Master/Engineer) or equivalent.
- A full-time position. The budget is initially available for 24 months, with the possibility of an extension.
