Overview
The VIB-KU Leuven Center for Brain & Disease Research is part of the VIB Life Sciences Institute and is embedded within the University of Leuven, which ranks among the world’s top 50 universities. At our Center, researchers study the cellular mechanisms of health and disease in the central nervous system.
Dr. Esther Klingler is starting up a new lab as of 1st October 2023 within the VIB-KU Leuven Center for Brain & Disease Research. The aim of the research group is to unravel developmental trajectories of emotional circuit neurons; more specifically the team will study the molecular trajectories of amygdala neurons during development. To this end, Esther and her team use advanced technologies, such as single-cell transcriptomics and connectomics.
Description
We are looking for a research technician with organizational and management skills, who will help us establish the lab and will support the team in daily research.
The successful candidate:
- has knowledge in general wet lab practice (e.g. histology, IHC, molecular biology) and willingness to learn new techniques and protocols;
- is expected to handle and perform experiments on animals (mice);
- will be responsible for aspects of lab organization such as welcoming and training new lab members, orderings and overseeing biosafety requirements;
- has the potential to grow into the role of lab manager when the team expands.

Your Profile
The successful candidate:
- possesses a professional bachelor's degree in biotechnology or master's degree in biomedical or biological sciences or an appropriate related field;
- is skilled in general lab practice and following standard protocols; expertise in rodent perfusion and dissection is a plus;
- is willing to work with mice (surgery, perfusion, and brain dissection of adults and embryos); has a Felasa B certificate or is willing to acquire it in the short term;
- has basic knowledge in at least one of these fields: molecular and cellular Biology / Neuroscience;
- must be meticulous, detail-oriented and self-motivated, and able to interact well with other members of a diverse research team;
- has very good organizational, time management, and communication skills;
- has very good verbal and written English and Dutch communication skills.

Het VIB-KU Leuven Centrum voor Hersenonderzoek maakt deel uit van het VIB Life Sciences instituut en KU Leuven, één van de 50 beste universiteiten ter wereld. De onderzoekers in ons onderzoekscentrum bestuderen de werkingsmechanismen van ons zenuwstelsel en de ziekteprocessen die het aantasten.
Dr. Esther Klingler start met een nieuw laboratorium op 1 oktober 2023 binnen het VIB-KU Leuven Centrum voor Hersenonderzoek. Het Klingler lab richt zich op de opheldering van de ontwikkelingstrajecten van neuronen die deel uitmaken van emotionele circuits; meer specifiek zal het team de moleculaire trajecten van amygdala-neuronen tijdens de hersenontwikkeling bestuderen. Hiervoor gebruiken Esther en haar team geavanceerde technologieën, zoals single cell transcriptomics en connectomics.
Jobomschrijving
We zijn op zoek naar een voltijds, gemotiveerde en toegewijde laboratoriumtechnoloog met organisatorische vaardigheden, die ons zal helpen bij het opzetten van het lab en het team zal ondersteunen bij het dagelijkse onderzoek.
Van de succesvolle kandidaat wordt verwacht dat
- Hij/zij kennis heeft van de basis labotechnieken (bv. histologie, IHC, moleculaire biologie) en bereid is om zich te verdiepen in nieuwe technieken en protocollen;
- zij/hij kan omgaan met experimenten op proefdieren (muizen) en bereid is deze uit te voeren;
- hij/zij verantwoordelijkheid opneemt voor bepaalde aspecten van labo-organisatie, zoals opleiding en verwelkoming van nieuwe medewerkers, bestellingen, en toezicht houdt op de vereisten voor bioveiligheid;
- er potentieel is om bij uitbreiding van het team door te groeien naar een rol als lab manager/coördinator.
Als startend labo zetten we ons in om ervoor te zorgen dat iedereen in het lab de nodige training en begeleiding krijgt die hij/zij nodig heeft om succesvol te zijn en zich gewaardeerd te voelen. Daarnaast krijg je de kans om een in frisse labosfeer terecht te komen en deze mee verder uit te bouwen.
Profiel
Je hebt een Bachelordiploma in biomedische/biologische/biochemische laboratoriumtechnologieën, een Masterdiploma in biomedische wetenschappen, of een gelijkwaardig diploma;
- Je bent bedreven in de algemene labotaken en het volgen van standaardprotocollen, expertise in perfusie en dissectie van knaagdieren is een pluspunt;
- Je bent bereid om met muizen te werken (chirurgie, perfusie en hersendissectie van volwassen dieren en van embryo's), waarbij je beschikt over een Felasa B-certificaat of bereid bent om dit op korte termijn te behalen;
- Basiskennis over één van deze gebieden is vereist: moleculaire en cellulaire biologie / neurowetenschappen;
- Je bent zeer nauwkeurig, proactief, zelfstandig en gemotiveerd;
- Je hebt uitstekende communicatieve en managementvaardigheden;
- Je bent een teamspeler en kan verantwoordelijkheid nemen;
- Je bent vloeiend in Nederlands en Engels, zowel gesproken als geschreven.
