VIB (Vlaams Instituut voor Biotechnologie) is a renowned life sciences research institute in Belgium, committed to conducting groundbreaking research in life sciences and biotechnology with an excellent reputation in technology transfer. VIB Technologies constitutes the centralized scientific research infrastructure of the institute and allows scientists access to high-end and innovative technologies. VIB Technologies comprises multiple state-of-the-art core facilities, each with a specific technology focus and embedded within the VIB centers in Ghent, Leuven, Antwerp or Brussels. The role of these core facilities is to support the 1900 researchers at VIB with their expertise. Within VIB Technologies we have over 120 staff members. 

The VIB BioImaging Core is a Core Facility that has specialized instrumentation for both light and electron microscopy and has been at the forefront of the development of Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy (CLEM) approaches to answer complex biological questions. The staff is the heart of the facility, and the experts are there to consult, train, and collaborate with users for experimental design, image acquisition and image analysis.

We are looking for a motivated lab technician to strengthen the team in Ghent, focused but not only dedicated to electron microscopy sample preparation.


Profile

Hard skills:

  • Professional bachelor or MSc. in Biochemical, Biomedical or Biotechnological laboratory techniques, or equivalent.
  • Excellent manual dexterity and experience in small sample dissection and handling.
  • Experience in one or several of the following items is an asset but not strictly required: cell culture, basic light or electron microscopy knowledge, sample preparation for microscopy.

Soft skills:

  • Service-oriented person, willing to support the research and activities of others
  • Can work independently and show some flexibility in your work
  • You are technology minded rather than independent research focused 
  • You are a team player with strong social and communication skills
  • Highly organized and structured, detail-oriented lab worker
  • You are willing to learn new techniques, expand your knowledge and take responsibility
  • You are proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Maintaining standard stock solutions
  • Maintain cell lines and prepare cell-based experiments
  • Operate and maintain standard laboratory equipment
  • Train users on basic light microscopy setups


Main activities

  • Support in general lab organization (managing stocks of antibodies, buffers, plasmids and lab products; placing orders)
  • Routine sample preparation for EM
  • Regular immunohistochemistry sample preparation on cells and tissue
